The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) came to be when a group of like-minded businesses, environmentalists and community leaders joined together after the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio failed in producing an agreement to stop deforestation. The group tasked themselves with creating a voluntary, market-based approach that would improve forest practices worldwide. FSC now operates in more than 80 countries, promoting environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management of the world’s forests. FSC believes that the current need for forest products can be met without compromising the health of the world’s forests for future generations. To achieve this goal, FSC has developed a set of 10 principles and 57 criteria that apply to FSC-certified forests around the world.

Many major organizations have operational policies in place that state their preference for FSC-Certified products. Green building standards, including the US Green Building Council’s LEED program, provide incentives for using FSC-certified materials. Increasing numbers of environmentally conscious consumers are requesting FSC-certified products in retail stores across the nation. Multiple governments require the use of FSC-certified products. Companies that produce FSC-certified products are granted access to these markets, as well as many others.
